Types of pergolas range fairly well in design and function. (There’s also plenty of color choices, as well.) So, that means there’s something for just about every outdoor space. What most people don’t know about pergolas is precisely what gets them to confuse it with other landscaping structures and outdoor entertainment or style spaces. However, with a few basic elements, it’s fairly easy to identify the different types of pergolas.

Types of pergolas are not radically indifferent from one another. That is to say, that most of them, if not practically all, share very much the same elements. For instance, other structures people might mistake for a pergola, a gazebo, trellis, arbor, pavilion, and others.

So, just what makes an outdoor structure an actual pergola? Generally speaking, exterior structures with an open roof and exposed walking surface. When most people think of a pergola, they probably picture a flat, open roof, with four support posts. This is among the most common styles and is sometimes accentuated with vines or fabric. However, there are some variations, hence different types of pergolas.

Perhaps the most ubiquitous is the freestanding pergola, which its namesake describes precisely what it is — a structure that stands on its own, usually with a flat, open roof. Another type is an attached pergola. As one might imagine, it is an exterior structure that is attached to another structure, usually the exterior of a house. Although most pergolas have flat roofs. Some are angled or pitched, hence the arched pergola. There are also louvered and awning pergolas, as well.
